Attractions

As a visitor to Kenai, your first stop might be the Kenai Bicentennial Visitors & Cultural Center, constructed in 1992. This structure is home to excellent examples of local fish and wildlife from king-sized salmon to musk ox, and a wide array of Alaska’s feathered friends.

In addition, you will find Dena’ina Athabaskan artifacts, pieces from the occupation of the Russian fur traders, a stunning grass basket and ivory collection as well as general “Alaskana”. The Center operates year-round, with summer visitors being treated to an annual themed contemporary art exhibition, historical and cultural interpretive programs, movies and a wealth of information for travelers looking to explore Kenai. Wintertime offers local residents “First Thursday” cultural programs, original and traveling art exhibitions, seminars, and meeting space for a variety of organizations. The center is managed by the Kenai Convention & Visitors Bureau on behalf of the City of Kenai.

As you leave the Center, you may choose to venture on a walking tour of Old Town Kenai. Your first stop will be the Kenai Chamber of Commerce office, also known as Moose Meat John’s Cabin. This historic cabin was moved in the late 50’s from Nikiski to its current location and has been utilized as the chamber office ever since. The cabin used to belong to a resident by the name of John Hedberg, a.k.a. “Moose Meat John,” born March 13th, 1865 in Sweden where he worked as a miner from an early age.

The tour of Old Town Kenai doesn’t stop here. When you continue on the tour, you will explore the history and culture of Kenai. From historic buildings and the Russian Orthodox Church, to a beautiful lookout of Mt. Redoubt and Cook Inlet, you will gain a glimpse of the history and culture the community takes pride in.

Activities

If it’s outdoor recreation that interests you during your visit to Kenai, we have something for everyone. During the summer months, take a stroll on the beach, fish off the banks of the Kenai River, watch for wildlife, canoe the Kenai Canoe Trails, take a hike or bike ride through our beautiful terrain, or simply kick back and relax at a Peninsula Oiler’s baseball game.

There is plenty to do during the winter months in Kenai as well. You may choose to cross country ski on the great trails offered in the area, or snow machine through the rolling hills and mountains throughout the Kenai Peninsula. Or maybe you prefer to curl up in front of a warm fire and watch the Aurora Borealis dance across the sky. However you choose to spend your time on the Kenai Peninsula and within the All American City of Kenai, we know you’ll enjoy your stay with us.
